But at Klöber designers work with ideas, engineers with expertise and developers with energy – so we’re already implementing a wide range of measures that are helping to conserve resources and save CO2.
The bigger the undertaking, the greater our motivation. Protecting the environment is just such an undertaking. It can only be a success if everyone does their bit. So here at Klöber we are proactive about sustainable use of raw materials. We use long-lasting materials to make our office chairs, some of which are recycled, and components that can be replaced easily. These strategies increase lifespan and minimise raw material use.
For instance, when they developed the Mera product family, they made sure that the cushions were easy to replace. And spares are always available for at least ten years at Klöber. Whether or not it’s possible and environmentally viable to replace the upholstery fabric is decided on a case-by-case basis. When choosing upholstery fabrics, an eye is kept on environmental friendliness – without exception. These fabrics are certified with labels such as “second nature”, “Euro‐Blume” and “Oeko‐Tex Standard 100”. This guarantees that far fewer pollutants and irritants are released into the environment.
Both the WOOOM seat shell and the “Cura” upholstery fabric are made of polyester from post-consumer plastic bottles that are no longer suitable for their original purpose. In terms of material properties, there is no difference between recycled and native polyester. The main difference is the environmental footprint.
Manufacturing recycled polyester requires less energy and fewer resources, and causes lower CO2 emissions than native polyester production. Instead of consuming resources and generating more waste, existing materials are recycled and reborn as a new product. This reduces the ecological footprint without compromising on quality standards or technical performance.
Every degree counts: if the office temperature is lowered for instance by just 1 °C during the heating phase, the heating costs are reduced by 6 per cent. And in summer, for each degree warmer in the climate control settings, around 4% of electrical energy is saved. This savings potential inspired Klöber to come up with a world innovation!
