Register nowOwingen, September 2019. Cura is a high-performance two-coloured polyester weave fabric made from 98% post-consumer recycled PET bottles. The product is manufactured by Danish firm Gabriel, one of Europe’s leading providers of upholstery fabrics and close partner of Klöber. The new collection, offered by Klöber in 27 shades, is another step towards improving the environmental footprint for the seating manufacturer from Owingen. The company is also bringing an added bonus to the modern office in terms of environmental friendliness and high-quality design.
Gabriel manufactures the Cura fabric collection out of used PET bottles that are no longer adequate for their intended purpose. The Danish furniture fabric supplier is contributing towards the environment by doing this, because the recycled polyester manufacturing process consumes less energy, saves resources and generates lower CO2 emissions than production of the standard alternatives. The advantage is that the ecological footprint is reduced without losing out on quality. As a result, the Cura fabric – which has received multiple environmental awards – ticks all the boxes in terms of sustainability standards at Klöber. These principles apply from the ground up for the office seating manufacturer – many of the materials used by Klöber have been awarded environmental certificates. These include SECOND NATURE™ and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. The Cura fabric collection by Gabriel bears the EU Ecolabel and has also been certified in accordance with OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100.
Its matt and slightly irregular looking texture allows Cura to imitate the aesthetic of natural fibres and create an organic look: the colour palette is derived from the world of minerals, offering a harmonious balance of low-key, muted hues alongside brighter, bolder shades. Meanwhile grey fibres form the underlying colour basis for a subtle yet vibrant melange effect, which really brings out the main colour. In combination with Klöber office furniture, the new fabric collection lends modern offices and co-working spaces a natural, inviting atmosphere for relaxed working. A further benefit: the polyester fabric has a long lifespan and is durable – as well as being easy to clean and fast-drying. Cura does not crease easily and retains its shape, and it can also be stretched and formed for high-performance upholstery applications.
SECOND NATURE™ SECOND NATURE™ certified materials consist entirely of recycled industrial surplus. They are renewable, compostable and climate-neutral. Only eco-friendly dyes and energy-efficient power looms are used, the energy requirement is largely met by green energy. Care is also taken to reduce the amount of wastewater produced.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Oeko-Tex goes beyond the mandatory requirements and applies stricter standards than other similar labels in the health area. The requirements focus on levels of chemical substances which may affect fertility or cause skin irritations, allergies or cancer, or damage to the nervous system or internal organs.
EU Ecolabel Consumer goods that stand out because of their low environmental impact and relatively minimal effects on health receive the EU Ecolabel certification. Evaluation of the product is not just based on individual characteristics, the whole lifecycle of the product is taken into consideration – including environmentally-friendly manufacture and disposal.
